CANDIDATES FORUM-2024
BRIEFLY
.
The CANDIDATES:
Incumbent/Director Dave Klym, Jeff Casserely and Jeremy Mickelson

Last night (07/15/24), the Ranch Association held their Election Candidates Forum in the Juniper room.
.
Less than ten residents attended and the event was moderated by Ranch President Kari Vickery via ZOOM.
Vickery kicked off the Forum by thanking the the three candidates for stepping up and stated: “You’re going to learn a lot and experience a lot...” and explained the process.
.
She stated: “We will ask you some questions and let you guys respond to them.”
After introductions the candidates fielded questions from Directors Kelly Davis, Bob Beveridge, Mike Carey, Julia Randall and Sheryl Jones.
.
Nine Proposed Questions were used as guidelines.
The residents were not provided copies of the Proposed Questions, however, Director Davis allowed Ranch Matters an opportunity to review the questions in advance and snap a photo for the record.

Davis started off by announcing he had a question not on Manager Judy Lapora’s list.
.
Manager Judy Lapora interjected: “Oh Surprise.”
Davis: “What’s your motivation for joining the Board and very happy that you all volunteered-I was just wondering what’s your motivation for doing this?”
.
Each Director asked their question, but Director Jones had a voice issue so her question, number seven, was read aloud by Manager Lapora.
Number Seven: “There will be times when board members have to come together to make tough decisions, such as increasing fees.
As a potential member will you be okay with being unpopular at times? You’ll need to be able to think critically and do what benefits the Ranch as a whole, even if it means making some people unhappy.
Are you comfortable making hard decisions?”
.
Candidate Mickelson: “I know this seat is going to come with good times and bad times, everything does. I’ve got pretty thick skin and not afraid to piss people off. They’re either going to love me or hate me-I’m going to challenge people.”
.
Candidate Casserely: “...My dad was a tough Irish cop, we’re not going to argue about it, this is the way it’s going to be...”
“We’re going to have as a body, look the situation over and say, because there’s not just one, but there’s nine on the board, they’re going to say, you know this probably makes the best sense right here.
Everybody raise their hand or not. That’s how the decision is made and after that, there’s no argument, this is what we decided.”
“If the community of Crooked River Ranch, or certain members of the community of Crooked River Ranch aren’t happy, they can apply for the Board and help make those decisions or come to a meeting.”
“I don’t have a problem with hard decisions.”
.
Candidate Klym: “Hard decisions are something you have to do.” Klym explained how he makes a decision and repeated “I absolutely have no trouble or problem making decisions.”
.
“CAVEAT”
.
Lapora reminded the candidates that there’s an Oath associated with their Directorship.
Lapora: “There’s a caveat, even if you don’t agree and the rest of the board does make a decision, you’re bound by your Oath of Office to follow that.”
.
Question number Eight was not asked, but has some relevance.
.
Number Eight: “The HOA board is not a dictatorship.
Homeowners put their trust in board members to look out for their best interest of the Ranch as a whole, not the board members own interests.
Board members must be unbiased, carry their own weight, and align with the vision of the Board and the Ranch even when it doesn’t suit their personal interest.
Are you a team player?”
*DICTATORSHIP: “Form of government in which one person or a small group possesses absolute power without effective constitutional limitations...”
