“BE ON GUARD”

‘Be on guard for yourselves and for the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers…”Acts 20:28

Today, churches faces an array of possible threats-thefts, robberies and the possibility for active shooters to name a few.

Many churches quietly have developed security and safety protocols as part of their overall ministry. They understand the need to recognize and prioritize security threats for the protection of their flocks and have implemented security measures that include using members of the congregation as security personnel.

Ranch Matters was asked to investigate whether individuals performing security functions for churches are required to be certified/licensed by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).

We contacted DPSST and their representative wasn’t sure about whether security related statutes applied to churches and their security personnel/programs. He said it was a good question and added, it’s never been asked before. He needed to research it and get back to me.

Later, the DPSST representative reported that only individuals PAID to work in a security capacity needed DPSST certification. He added: “Anybody who is working strictly as a church VOLUNTEER does not fall under DPSST’s purview.” No security certification required if services are of a volunteer nature.

THEY MAY NOT NEED BE CERTIFIED, BUT SHOULD BE QUALIFIED?

Churches get a pass, but still need to make sure their security volunteer staff, especially those armed have the right qualifications, background, training and temperament.

Biblically, church officials are encouraged to “BE ON GUARD…” and do their best to protect their flock. The Lord’s mandate is both spiritual and physical in nature requiring churches to not only protect the souls of their members, but additionally their members safety during services.
