BAIL OUT THE JAIL

Last Thursday, Ranch Matters had an opportunity to meet with Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins. We discussed an array of Ranch related matters, but this report will focus on one of the topics covered-MEASURE 16-93, Jail Operation Levy.

On May 21, 2019, the voters are being asked to consider funding Sheriff Adkins Jail for another 3 years. If approved the levy would keep the jail fully operational from July 1, 2019 to June 30, 2022.

The purposed levy of $1.39 per thousand of assessed property value is only 15 cents more than the current $1.24 per thousand that expires this June.

Sheriff Adkins explained the monies collected by the Jail Operations Levy, if passed, will only be used for running the jail and not for other Sheriff Operations…

Sheriff Adkins was up front and honest about why the money is needed. According to Adkins, if the levy fails, he will be forced to reduce the jail operations budget by approximately “45%”.
He added, deputies will be terminated and the inmate population will be cut from “110 inmates to 24.”

Further, subjects arrested by law enforcement would simply be handcuffed, transported to jail where they would be processed and given a ticket with a future court date/time.

Convicted defendants would have to check in, like at a hotel, to confirm room (Cell) availability and potentially placed on a waiting list before completing their sentence.

Parole and Probation Officers also will be impacted because they would be unable to sanction offenders to jail for violating their terms of probation.

We understand the Sheriff’s dilemma and see the need for the passage of this levy, However, many folks-taxpayers are saddled already with uncomfortable tax burdens and those living on the Ranch have to pay DUES…
