LETTER TO THE EDITOR
SEEKING THE TRUTH
By Carol Orr
Ranch President Carl Harbour on 10/16/20, emailed the following to Ranch Matters John Stevens “Your request to publish a letter from Davis Wright Tremaine, LLP in the monthly HOA newsletter, The Telegraph, was forwarded to me. After consultation with our attorney and INPUT FROM THE CRR BOARD OF DIRECTORS (emphasis added), we are declining your request. Your submission is inconsistent with our advertising/publishing policy.”
WHAT AM I TALKING ABOUT?
On 10/13/20, Portland attorney Duane Bosworth from the law firm Davis Wright Tremaine and on behalf of the nationally known Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press (“RCFP”) wrote Harbour/Board regarding “…the obstruction and harassment” of John Stevens and Dave Stangland’s journalism activities. Bosworth’s letter mentions a “hit list” and provides a couple of examples of the Board’s “wrongful obstruction and harassment.”
Bosworth cited complaints made to the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) against Stevens’ private investigators license. He said, “The DPSST has expressly stated that the investigation was prompted by CRR: As you may know, this investigation is related to your involvement with CRR Association” and added, at least one of the complaints and maybe others, is connected to former Ranch President Dave Palmer…
INPUT FROM THE CRR BOARD?
Curiosity got the best of me and I wrote the board on 10/25 and asked them who knew about this letter and whose INPUT was obtained by Harbour? Was this an official board decision or just a few of the good o’boys deciding Association business over beers.
Two Board Members responded, Directors Stephanie Proffitt and Richard Ebers. Both stated they were clueless and Proffitt added, “Any future reference to this unknown topic please remove me from your distribution list.”
In a second email from Proffitt she apparently does know something after all and told me to, “Get my facts straight from more than one person.”
My facts are based on Bosworth’s letter, personal observation/experiences and I’m not sure what Proffitt meant by the “one person.”
Rather than ask me any questions about this serious topic I was schooled on proper Board decorum.
According to Harbour, he obtained “INPUT FROM THE CRR BOARD” but at least two Board Members admitted they were clueless. How many Board Members actually took part in this decision and where is the minutes?
Should seeking the truth be this difficult?
